Registration for Year in Industry
Home Students
Students who are already registered on the Year in Industry programmes are required to register online for the placement year.
Once you have received your exam results and have successfully completed the year, you will be able to access online registration via your MUSE account. You will receive guidance regarding re-registration with your exam results and must complete 'Online Registration' by the start of autumn term.
Students who are not registered for the Year in Industry programme need to complete a 'Change of Programme' form, listing the appropriate programmes ' with Year in Industry' and have the form signed by your departmental Registration Contact.
International students
If you are registered for a standard course and wish to transfer to the programme with a Year in Industry you may be required to apply for the Academic Technology Approval Schemes (ATAS) clearance. Please remember that your Change of Programme form will not be finalised until we receive your ATAS clearance certificate. Students are not allowed to start their placements if they are not fully registered for the Year in Industry programmes.
Students may also require a visa extension to move onto the Year in Industry course. The University of Sheffield has trained immigration specialists to assist you with your questions. You can find information on visa issues via the International Students page maintained by SSiD.
International students are strongly recommended to take advice from our International Office Immigration Advisers on how to proceed with their placement registration.
Tuition Fees & Maintenance Loan
When registered on the Year In Industry programme, as part of your annual registration for the placement year you are required to pay a reduced tuition fee.
Included in your fee:
You remain a fully registered student , on an accredited course with academic assessment.
You retain your student status:
This is, in particular, vital for overseas students whose visa requirements are met by taking their placement as part of an approved course of study.
You are exempt from paying council tax - please refer to council tax exemption.
You will be assigned an academic who will act as your Placement Tutor who assesses and gives feedback on your work and will visit you on-site at least once during the year.
You will receive support before and during the placement. The Year in Industry Team is in regular contact with the company and is available for any questions or concerns you have during the year. If a resolution cannot be reached over the phone, a member of the Year in Industry Team will visit you to resolve the issue.
You retain access to university services and resources including library & MOLE access, sports facilities & support services including Student Access to Mental Health Support (SAMHS) and the Careers Service.
The majority of students (who are in receipt of support from Student Finance England) who are on a paid placement will be able to access a non-means tested maintenance loan. The amount you can receive is dependent on where you will be living and is a reduced amount. Please refer to this document for more information.
