Tier 4 visa and undertaking a placement:
If you are an international student on a degree programme that includes an Industrial Placement Year, then there is no need to complete any additional paperwork to undertake a placement. When applying for placements, or once you have secured a placement, the employer may ask for a letter from the University which confirms that you can do a placement. The Engineering Placements Team can provide this letter, please email engineering-placements@sheffield.ac.uk to request this letter.
If you are not on a programme which includes an Industrial Placement Year, once you have secured a placement offer, you will need to complete a change of programme form and contact the International Student Support team for advice on extending your student visa.
If you are adding a placement year to your degree after registering at the University, you may need to apply for a visa extension. More information is available at Student Visas and Immigration.
Students from the EU:
If you are an international student from a country within the European Union, you are still able to complete an Industrial Placement Year if you are on a degree programme that includes this. The Engineering Placements Team will support you throughout this process and will act as your sponsor during your placement.
Note:
Ultimately, provided that there is no statement to say 'British Nationals only' on the placement advert, then international students are eligible to apply for that vacancy - the University will sponsor you for the duration of your degree and therefore placement year, as placement years are a valid part of your course, and doesn't constitute to more than 50% of the overall course.
