Assessments
The Year in Industry is assessed on a pass/fail basis. In order to be awarded a degree with the title 'Year in Industry' you need to complete both the placement year and pass all three parts of the formal assessment.
Please refer to the Student Handbook 2024-25 for full details of the assessments.
You will be assessed on the following: pre-visit form, final placement report, oral/poster presentation.
You should submit your Pre-visit form no later than 2 weeks before your placement tutor visit takes place.
Forms should be uploaded via blackboard (FCE Year in Industry ACADEMIC YEAR 2023~24)
If your employer requests a nondisclosure or confidentiality agreement to be signed by the University before the visit takes please, please email engineering-placements@sheffield.ac.uk. We need a minimum of 2 weeks to process the NDA.
The Pre-visit form is part of the Year in Industry assessment and therefore non completion will result in failure to pass the year.
Visits may be virtual or in person.
Final Placement Report
You will submit one written report summarising the work that you have been involved in, the skills you have developed and how your experience in the workplace has combined with your University experience to date.
Your report can be aided by your Professional Development diary, if you chose to keep one during the year, but it will need to be a comprehensive report, not just a summary of your diary entries.
This report must describe both the technical, and transferable skills you have developed.
Deadline, detailed guidelines and word count for your department is outlined in Appendix 1 of the Student Handbook and a handy and comprehensive guidance document providing details on writing and submitting the report is available here.

Tutor Visit
During your Year in Industry you will be assigned an academic who will be your Placement Tutor.

Visits may be virtual or in person depending on what is most suitable.
The Year in Industry Team will initiate the organisation of this visit by contacting you and your line manager during the autumn semester, you are responsible for making sure your line manager is free to attend and make sure a suitable meeting platform (e.g. Google meet/Microsoft teams/ SKYPE) or an appropriate meeting room is booked.
The Placement Tutor will provide you with feedback on your current placement progress, either verbally during the visit or written feedback via blackboard/turnitin.
Your tutor will also discuss any issues raised on your pre-visit form, and indicate where you could further develop e.g. skills, understanding of the company, or the application of technical knowledge.
They will also discuss your initial thoughts for potential work that might support your end of placement report.
The Year in Industry team will continue to be your first point of contact at the University throughout your placement year. Further support is provided by your departmental Year in Industry Programme Lead who coordinates the academic programme on behalf of your department.
