Samsung Case Study

Andrew Do

Project Assistant Intern - Samsung SDS Europe

BSc Computer Science & Business Management (ITMB)

Andrew Do, is originally from Korea and came the University of Sheffield 3 years ago, to start a Bachelors of Information Technology Management for Business (with a Year in Industry).  During his 2nd year, Andrew applied to undertake a year away from the University, as part of his course, to put his degree into practice. Andrew was successful in gaining a year in industry at Samsung SDS Europe, based in Surrey.

Samsung SDS Europe, look to improve business functions across companies logistics, software programming and processes.  Andrew has been working in this last department which

works to enhance customer - business processes e.g AI answering customer queries instead of human employees.

As a project assistant, Andrew has developed project management techniques, programming language as well client management.  However, his Korean background has been extremely beneficial in working with employees who have come from Samsung’s origin country of Korea to work in the UK and providing a transition between the two cultures.

60 seconds with Andrew Do:

Why did you decide to do a year in industry?

Needed to spice up my CV to boost my employability after finishing my course.

How did you find your year in industry opportunity?

It was pretty hard to find a place for a non-native English speaker and a non-British but I managed to find my niche (a Korean speaking engineering role).

Tell us about project(s) which you have been most involved with whilst on year in industry?

B2B business development including ongoing project management (software integration projects etc).

What do you like about the company you have done your year in industry with?

Name value (Samsung), lots of chances to be involved in real crucial projects (not just printing documents and making coffee), friendly colleagues that are happy to teach you new things, and especially very nice lunch!

What has been your favourite part of completing a year in industry?

Learning how to work in a professional environment, getting to know how technology is impacting the industry, market trends, and seeing how professionals actually live outside the academic university life.

Which part of your degree has helped you with undertaking a year in industry the most?

Technological aspects were important but not a must - I would say business management, especially when it comes to organisational culture and professional behaviour at work.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

Using this experience at Samsung SDS Europe, hopefully joining Samsung Electronics HQ in Korea and start my career there.
