Artemis Case Study
Rory Haggart
Student Engineer - Artemis Intelligent Power Ltd
MEng Aerospace Engineering
How did you find you role?
Through the Year in Industry Team
Why did you want to do a placement?
I wanted relevant work experience for my degree
I thought it would improve my graduate prospects
I wanted to develop on-the-job skills to help the rest of my degree
I wanted to put my skills I had already learnt into day-to-day use
What was the highlight of your placement?
I've been involved in such a diverse range of projects and to such a surprisingly high level of responsibility. I really admire the trust that Artemis puts in their student engineers. I feel I've come away from my placement with a well-developed set of skills that span multiple disciplines, and this includes softer skills that I felt I was lacking in before I started my placement. I'm really appreciative of all of the patience and encouragement I had from everyone that I worked with.
What's one tip you would give students looking at placement years?
Ask as many questions as you feel comfortable asking! Asking questions of those around you not only builds on your knowledge and your skills, but it gives you an opportunity to just have a chat with professional engineers, and develop your workplace relationships
What did you gain from your placement year?
Developed technical skills
Developed professional skills
Friends through your workplace/ other Placement students
Awareness of the roles I do/do not want to do in the future
Experience of living somewhere different
Feedback from Artemis:
Rory settled in very quickly to our team and was soon pushing multiple projects forward in a very impressive way. He went into a very deep level of detail in all of his work, including testing, analysis, and software development. Importantly, this detail was not at the expense of solid communication and an ever-friendly manner. We were sorry to see him go!
